About the Schizophrenia & The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta

Beyond Limitations....Inspiring Hope.

"Our Mission is to improve the quality of life for those affected by Schizophrenia and psychosis through education, support programs, public policy and research."

One in 100 people will have some form of Schizophrenia in their lifetime.  Schizophrenia is an illness that typically begins in early adulthood, between theages of 15 and 25.  About one third of people with Schizophrenia have one or two psychotic episodes and completely recover.  The next third will have more than two psychotic episodes and will need ongoing medication, but can manage a good quality of life.  Slightly less than one third will have a chronic form of the illness.

A person with Schizophrenia has 50 times the risk of attempting suicide than a person without mental illness.

News and entertainmnet media tend to link mental illness and violence.  Violence is NOT a symptom of Schizophrenia.  Most people with Schizophrenia are not violent towards others, but are generally withdrawn and prefer to be alone.

Schizophrenia is ten times more common than AIDS, sudden infant death syndrome and melanoma combined.
