Topic: Health and Exercise at the Workstation in the Workplace
Presentation Overview

Speaker: Daryn Kemp from Applied Knowledge Consulting Inc. will be bringing in a desk; chair, keyboard tray and monitor to demonstrate the proper way a workstation should look and adjust the workstation to keep us healthier longer with a mock ergonomic assessment for the group.

Presentation outline
•  Overview of ergonomic principles
•  Real world example using member in chair at desk with keyboard tray and monitor

The vast majority of Daryn’s 14 years of experience in the Office Furniture industry has come from a hands-on approach in the service and installation side of the business.  Having begun his career on the trucks with a Calgary installation company, Daryn worked his way up to managing branch locations in both Vancouver and Edmonton before making the plunge into sales in January of 2009.  His recent transition to owning his own consulting firm reflects his commitment to the highest levels of customer service and his dedication to helping clients achieve their organizational goals across a number of areas including ergonomics, office furniture, commercial signage and painting.

With respect to ergonomics, his philosophy is quite simple - the entire system is affected by small and often overlooked changes to one particular component.  Any approach to setting up an ergonomically correct workstation must take this into account.  A good chair or a good keyboard tray is simply not enough.  His hands on approach focuses on adjusting necessary and relevant workspace components immediately to have an instantaneous impact, and recommending further changes and adjustments to keep the end user problem free for weeks and years to come.

Speaker:  Christian Gannon will demonstrate various different causes of physical stress at the workstation (desk work, poor posture, increased muscle tension, etc.), and offer practical, effective and easy exercises people can do every day at their desk to lessen the effects of repetitive strain on the body.

While being active in many sporting activities, he has been privately training clients for many years now with great success due to his "Real-Life" fitness Christian is a Certified Personal Trainer who is proud of the fact that EVERY ONE of his clients has enjoyed their customized programs so much that each of them is willing to act as a referral!! hilosophy. Chris's greatest pleasures include swimming, mountain biking, climbing, yoga, wakeboarding and his beloved car collection. He also enjoys the open road while out on his Yamaha R6 he has lovingly named "Darth".

Having been both a professional business person & entrepreneur, Chris knows what it is like to have to maintain a healthy lifestyle while living life on the road, out of a suitcase and eating whatever you can find in your glove box!  He mostly enjoys seeing his clients through their own fitness evolution and looks forward to every session!

Christian will also demonstrate the following outline:

•  Basic daily body weight exercises that can be performed anywhere
•  Specific exercises to counteract the stressors that are present while working at a desk
•  Core strengthening to help correct problems, and prevent re-occurring physical issues
•  Stretches to help increase range of motion and reduce risk of injury
•  Breathing techniques to help reduce tension and stress, lower blood-pressure, and increase focus and clarity.
•  Proper nutrition to help reduce inflammation, burn fat, and increase energy

Dawn Becker, President of the Western Canada Division of IAAP
will be presenting at our INFORMATION NIGHT!

This INFORMATION NIGHT will be an amazing evening to share with your co-workers, friends and other administrative professionals what a great organization IAAP is and how it provides ongoing continuing education, networking, the latest information and research, as well as the certification programs.

However, the evening is fully dependent on you! We need our members to reach out and invite two guests who you believe would be interested in IAAP. They can be co-workers, friends, neighbours, or contacts you have met through your day-to-day work. Who to invite is up to you, but we need your help getting the word out! Since there are 56 members, there should be 168 attendees! Do not assume someone else will take care of this, please be active in your chapter and ask! If it is easier for you to email Alicia the guest's information, she is more than happy to invite your contacts for you. Please send her the information!

Need a little incentive? For each guest that you bring, you will receive an extra door prize ticket!

The information night is described in the poster (view poster).  Please post it, send it, and circulate it as much as you can. We sure want to have a large turnout since the President of WCD is coming! Let’s show her how grand the Edmonton Chapter is!

We would love to see all the members dressed in Black, Purple or White for the meeting thus supporting this year’s Passion & Purpose theme!

Registration Deadline: November 1

For this evening, please register yourself and your guests, by sending an email to Alicia at alicia.prilipp@aecom.com. We require your guest’s company name and contact information, i.e.: email address or phone number as registration information will be confirmed.

We are looking forward to seeing you and meeting your guests at Information Night!

Dinner Meeting and Elections & Presentation
Workplace Bullying and Workplace Violence

Barbara Semeniuk in this topic addresses the subject of Workplace Bullying and Workplace Violence.  It is a little known fact that Canada is in the top three countries in the world with workplace violence issues. People die because this topic is not adequately addressed in emergency response plans and corporately.  Workplace Bullying is more an issue in workplaces than sexual discrimination and racial harassment.  It cuts across all  levels of employees,  amongst all religious, sexual and racial lines.  It is the number one issue why people leave and/or experience anxiety and suffering on the job.  Often it is condoned as just that managers or subordinate’s behaviour especially if they are productive. Often corporate bullies will select victims who report to him and/or her and cannot readily fight back.  Victims offer suffer greatly and some have snapped killing coworkers and the bullying person indiscriminately. In Barbara’s opinion just like MADD changed the view on driving while drunk and there is zero tolerance to schoolyard bullying.....a change in corporate behaviour must occur and zero tolerance should be granted towards workplace bullies and associated workplace violence issues.
